News:
Defense Department assigns PTACs training role in supply
chain technology
The Office of the Under Secretary of Defense, Supply Chain Integration has entered into an agreement with the Association of Procurement Technical Assistance Centers to provide outreach and training in newly directed military packaging requirements.
The Department of Defense and Office of Management and Budget has proposed new regulations requiring that goods being sent to the military be marked with the same type of Radio Frequency Identification (RFID) tags now used by most major retailers to manage supply chains and inventories. The proposed change requires contractors to affix passive RFID tags at the case and palletized unit load levels when shipping packaged materiel to any location within the Department of Defense logistics network.
Without a systematic method of identifying and locating materiel, supplies are difficult to locate, shortages are difficult to identify, and costs run high for redundant inventories. Leveraging RFID technology will improve the Department of Defense’s ability to get the right materiel, at the right time, and in the right condition to soldiers in the field.
These two photos from the Gulf are indicative of pre- and post-implementation of RFID tagging.
Ninety-three Procurement Technical Assistance Centers (PTACs) are receiving technical training from the Defense Logistics Agency (DLA) to provide no cost assistance to DoD suppliers on RFID.
These centers form a nationwide network of dedicated procurement professionals working to support and extend DLA’s mission of providing the best value for goods and services to America’s Armed Forces and other government agencies. PTACs are the bridge between buyer and supplier, bringing to bear both their knowledge of government contracting and the capabilities of contractors to maximize fast, reliable service to our government with better quality at lower costs.
The Rhode Island Procurement Technical Assistance Center (RIPTAC) is located at the Rhode Island Economic Development Corporation in Providence. A supplier training schedule will be posted to both the PTAC and RIEDC websites as soon as it is available.
Additional information regarding PTAC can be found at www.riptac.com.
